| Monarchist's dangerous idea - give royals chance to be tyrants HENRY VIII:terrible tyrant by Sue Davies Some idiot royalist wrote to the Western Mail with the bizarre proposal that we should ditch all politicians and let the queen rule as an absolute monarch with son Charles as governor-general of the UK. He would probably jump at the idea. having never really had any kind of worthwhile role in his entire life. What a chance to put many of his half-baked ideas into practice. While I share the disquiet about many of our politicians, this is hardly the answer because as history has shown almost every absolute monarch quickly becomes a brutal tyrant, presiding over murder on a colossal scale, widespread corruption and far more nepotism than there is now. For instance, take the Tudors. We teach our children that the Tudors were beloved leaders who should be looked up to, having led Britain into a bright golden age. What rubbish. The Tudors executed, i.e. murdered, tens of thousands of their subjects, mainly for dissent, many of them Welsh. Such sad facts rarely get a mention in the mainstream history books. That's why we have a monarchy - it is only through telling packs and packs of lies about about really went on. Anyhow, I can't see Elizabeth II or any of the royals being much interested in becoming absolute rulers. Why would they? As it is, they live pampered lives at the taxpayer's expense, despite being one of the richest families in the world, and don't have to do much. They must laugh like drains all the way to the bank. Letter accepted By the way, the Western Mail accepted a letter along these lines from me but it was heavily censored before publication, for instance, omitting any reference to the Tudors and the packs of lies. It's not surprising, the Mail claims to be an independent newspaper but has also described itself as a royalist-supporting. You can't have it both ways.
